Riding Assignments for Volunteer/Paid on Call Departments

A lot of larger municipalities all have riding assignments that they know at the beginning of the shift either because of departmental policy or from being told at roll call. Smaller paid on call and volunteer departments do not have a luxury of knowing who is going to a fire until right before pulling out onto the apron. Along with the above challenges a lot of smaller departments do not have a "Truck Company". So everything is done off of an Engine. The positive side to these departments is they can sometimes staff the first rig out the door with up to SIX personnel. This is a very broad overview of potential riding assignments.

3. Rear Officer Tailman

4. Rear Driver Tailman

Tools - Radio, Box Light, Irons.

6. Forward Driver Tailman

Tools - Radio, Box Light, Chainsaw, Maul (or other striking tool).

- Perform either ventilation or primary search (officer dependent)

All of these positions are subject to change depending on conditions and immediate actions needing to be taken. Search and suppression should be the two primary things to focus on. If you need to commit everyone to search, then ventilate when you can.
